2012 History Teacher Workshop

Take one day out of your summer to enrich your students’ learning all year long!
The Mariners’ Museum’s Teacher Workshops are designed to provide instructors with new insights into creating and implementing more engaging and stimulating lesson plans for the classroom. Each day- long session focuses on both essential historical facts and creative ways to bring history alive for your students. Emphasis is placed on connecting history with economics, math, science, and language arts and continuing the learning process long past the school day.

The cost is $45 per workshop per day. The price includes teaching materials, a catered lunch, and admission to The Mariners’ Museum. Discounts given for multiple workshop registration.

Examine a time when worlds collided. We’ll focus on Europe’s desire to reach Asia, the resulting expansion into the New World, and the cultural impact felt around the globe.

Titanic: History and Legacy

2012 Science Teacher Workshop
August 1-2, 2012
The Mariners’ Museum’s Science Teacher Workshops are designed to provide instructors with new insights into creating and implementing more engaging and stimulating lesson plans for the class- room. Each day-long session focuses on connecting scientific concepts with practical uses both in the classroom and in the world around us. Register Now!
Each workshop is $45 with the exception of the Kayak day which is $75 (includes rental fees for field equipment, kayaks, life jackets and pad- dles). Teachers will receive the rate of $140 for all three ses- sions. The price also includes teacher materials, a catered lunch and free admission to The Mariners’ Museum.

Ironclad, Chemistry and Conservation
Wednesday - August 1, 2012
9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Using The Mariners’ Museum’s state-of-the-art Batten Conservation Lab as a backdrop, participants examine how chemistry is used to conserve metal and organic objects found in a marine archaeological environment. Real world application is discussed as you learn about ongoing conservation of artifacts recovered from the Civil War Ironclad Monitor and how lessons can be applied to the classroom.

Chesapeake Bay: An Estuary in Crisis

9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

While exploring changes in the Chesapeake Bay over time, this workshop discusses the factors that have contributed to its decline. We will examine the Bay as an ecosystem and conclude with a walk on the Noland Trail and a discussion of what actions can be taken to help save the Bay.

Kayaking on the Bay: Fresh vs. Saltwater

8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Spend a day kayaking and gain a unique perspective of the Chesapeake Bay to take back to the classroom. We’ll explore many aspects of the Bay’s ecosystem while paddling in Lake Maury and the James River.
